Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram

It is known especially for its rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), giant open-air reliefs such as the famous ‘Descent of the Ganges’, and the temple of Rivage, with
thousands of sculptures to the glory of Shiva. This is a town on a strip of land between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is known for its temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries.
